…In the early 11th century, St. Gallen had a capable editor of temple tradition, Ekkehart IV (c. 980-c. 1060). The next generation was represented by the stern orator Peter Damiani (author of the Song of Songs and other works), the Archbishop of Canterbury Lanfranc (c. 1005-89), the two authorities Anselm, and especially Abelard, who attracted many lecturers at the University of Paris, and his opponent Bernard of Clairvaux, a leading figure in the religious world at the time. In particular, the story of the tragic love affair between Abelard and his lover Heloise was widely known, and the many letters they exchanged, especially the first one, The Story of My Misfortunes, stand out in medieval religious literature. …
