Scheduled caste (English spelling)

Scheduled caste (English spelling)

[Large domestic disparities]
The Indian Constitution uses various expressions such as "backward classes" and similar expressions. Its meaning is still a subject of debate, but there is no consensus that the original meaning of "backward classes" is the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. The Scheduled Castes are the so-called untouchables among Hindus and Sikhs, and the English word is plural because each state has its own list of jatis (sub-castes).

From [Caste]

…In contrast, the Shudras were considered to be eternal castes (ekaja) who could not attend the initiation ceremony, and suffered various religious, social, and economic discrimination from the reborn castes. And below the Shudras were the untouchables (today called scheduled castes), who were placed outside the framework of the four varnas. They are also called "those belonging to the fifth varna (pañcama)" or "those without varnas." …

From [Untouchables]

In the West, they are also known as pariahs. Today, the discriminatory term meaning "untouchable" is no longer used, and they are officially called scheduled castes. In Hindu society, which is strongly dominated by the idea of purity and impurity and which has always viewed people and their occupations from that perspective, the outcast system has developed in a complex way.
