Generally, it refers to a blue ribbon awarded as the highest honor. It comes from the fact that the Order of the Garter, the highest medal in the UK, originally had a blue ribbon. It specifically refers to the honor given to the ship that holds the record for the fastest transatlantic ship. This began in the early 19th century when wool-carrying clippers that sailed between the UK and Australia were awarded the highest speed throughout the year and the fastest wool loading, and had them hoist the ribbon on their masts. Later, in the 20th century, the efficiency of maritime transport improved dramatically, and shipping companies became involved in fierce competition in the Atlantic. Newly built ships increased in speed year by year and set new transatlantic records, and the champions of the time were praised around the world as the champions of the blue ribbon, likening them to the wool clippers of the 19th century. In 1934, British MP H. Hales donated a trophy on which the names of record-holding ships since 1834 were engraved, and in 1935 an international committee of representatives of shipping companies was formed to determine the Blue Ribbon. The fastest speed to date is 55.61 knots, or 2 days, 14 hours and 7 minutes, achieved in 1989 by the Gentry's Eagle, owned by Hawaiian real estate magnate T. Gentry. This was expanded to trans-Pacific routes, and a Pacific Blue Ribbon competition was held by Japanese ships. Today, it is common to award the Blue Ribbon to the best work in film, theater and other competitions.
