A collection of nonsense words

Japanese: 戯言養気集 - ぎげんようきしゅう

A rakugo book. Author unknown. Published around 1615 (Genwa era). Two volumes printed in old movable type. The original was burned, but only the second volume is in the Tenri Library, and a copy of the entire text is in volume 4 of "One Hundred Unpublished Essays." It is a collection of short stories from the early Edo period, and contains about 70 stories, including humorous tales between a temple monk and a young boy, and witty tales about Nobunaga and Hidetsugu's attendants. There are 37 stories that are common to "Yesterday is Today's Tale," published around the same time, and it seems that different Otogishu (commoners' group) collected humorous stories that were popular among the people in the early Edo period. There are many stories of ignorance, wit, failure, and puns, such as "I heard that bamboo shoots grow into big bamboo, so I'll eat Matsutake mushrooms when they grow into big trees," and "A monk plucked the feathers of a wild goose and managed to take only the meat."

噺本。作者不明。1615年ころ(元和年間)刊。古活字本2巻。原本は焼失したが，下巻のみが天理図書館，全文の写しが《未刊随筆百種》巻四にある。江戸初期の小咄を集めたもので，寺の僧と稚児との滑稽な話，信長･秀次の近習の頓智話など70ほどの話を収める。同じころ出版された《昨日は今日の物語》に共通する話が37話もあり，江戸初期民間に流行した滑稽ばなしを，ちがった御伽衆がそれぞれに集めたものらしい。たけのこが大きい竹になると聞き，マツタケも大木になったら食べようとか，僧がガン(雁)の毛をむしってまんまと肉だけを持ってゆかれたとか，無知，頓智，失敗，洒落が多い。
