Traveler's Tree

Japanese: タビビトノキ

Also known as Asian cabbage or ravenala. An evergreen medium-sized tree of the Musaceae family native to Madagascar. Its leaves are similar to those of the Baskan cabbage, but many of them grow in a fan shape at the end of a trunk that is 5 to 20 meters tall. The base of the petiole is swollen and collects water, which is said to have been used by travelers to quench their thirst, hence the name "traveler's tree." The flowers are white and grow on short axillary inflorescences. It is cultivated in greenhouses for decorative purposes.

オウギバショウ，ラベナラとも。マダガスカル島原産のバショウ科の常緑中高木。葉はバショウに似ているが，高さ５〜20mの幹の先に扇状に多数つく。葉柄の基部が肥大して水がたまり，旅人がこれでのどをうるおしたというので旅人木の名がある。花は腋生の短い花序の上につき，白色。観賞用に温室で栽培される。
