Phyllotreta striolata (English name)

Japanese: キスジノミハムシ（英語表記）Phyllotreta striolata

A member of the family Chrysomelidae, this insect is a pest of cruciferous vegetables such as radishes, turnips, and Chinese cabbage. The adult body is black, and as its name suggests, it has broad yellow stripes on its forewings. Its hind legs are well developed, and it will jump away and disappear if you approach. It is 2-3 mm long. It inhabits all over Japan, and adults appear from around mid-March. It bores small round holes in the leaves of cruciferous vegetables, and these holes become irregular as the leaves grow. It lays eggs shallowly in the soil at the base of the vegetables. The hatched larvae feed on the epidermis of the roots.

甲虫目ハムシ科に属し，ダイコン，カブ，ハクサイなどアブラナ科の野菜の害虫。成虫の体は黒色で，その名のように上翅に黄色の幅広い条紋がある。また後脚がよく発達しており，近づくと跳んで姿をくらます。体長2～3mm。日本全土に生息し，成虫は3月中旬ごろから出現する。アブラナ科の野菜の葉に小さな丸い穴を点々とあけ，この食べあとは葉が大きくなると不規則な穴となる。野菜の根もとの土中に浅く卵を産みつける。孵化（ふか）した幼虫は根の表皮を食害する。
