1871‐1950 Austrian psychoanalyst. Jewish. Graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Vienna in 1895. One of S. Freud's oldest direct students. Helped found the Vienna Psychoanalytic Society in 1908, and served as its vice-president from 1923. Otto Fenichel (1898-1946) conducted educational analysis of many psychoanalysts, including Reich. He was interested in the psychotherapy of mental illness, and argued that mental illness was not simply a matter of repressed sexual or aggressive impulses, as in neurosis, but rather a matter of the ego's inability to cope with these impulses, becoming a pioneer of ego psychology, the mainstream of modern psychoanalysis.
