Austrian psychoanalyst. Jewish. Graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Vienna in 1895. One of S. Freud's oldest direct students. Helped found the Vienna Psychoanalytic Society in 1908, and served as its vice-president from 1923. Otto Fenichel (1898-1946) conducted educational analysis of many psychoanalysts, including Reich. He was interested in the psychotherapy of mental illness, and argued that mental illness was not simply a matter of repressed sexual or aggressive impulses, as in neurosis, but rather a matter of the ego's inability to cope with these impulses, becoming a pioneer of ego psychology, the mainstream of modern psychoanalysis.

オーストリアの精神分析学者。ユダヤ人。1895年ウィーン大学医学部卒。S.フロイトのもっとも古い直弟子の一人。1908年ウィーン精神分析学会の設立に加わり，23年から副会長。フェニヘルOtto Fenichel(1898‐1946)，ライヒをはじめ多くの精神分析者の教育分析を行った。精神病の精神療法に関心をもち，精神病は，神経症のように抑圧された性衝動や攻撃衝動だけの問題でなく，むしろそれらの衝動に対処できない自我の弱さの問題であると説き，現代の精神分析の主流である自我心理学の先駆者となった。
