One of France's earliest troubadours, he was Duke of Aquitaine (IX) and Count of Poitiers (VII). He owned a vast territory larger than that of the King of France and participated in the Crusades of 1101-02, but was excommunicated by the Church several times for bad behavior. The eleven surviving poems reflect his tendencies, sometimes lascivious and free-spirited, full of lyricism and delicacy, which is why he is called "Billon of the 11th century."
