A city in northwestern Maharashtra, western India. It is located 150 km northeast of Mumbai (Bombay), on the upstream coast of the Godavari River at the foot of the Western Ghats. Population 1,076,967, population including surrounding areas 1,152,048 (2001). It is known as a holy place for Hindus, second only to Varanasi and Allahabad in the middle Ganges River basin, and attracts many worshippers. In particular, hundreds of thousands of devotees visit the great Kumbh Mela festival, which is held once every 12 years. The Godavari River bathing area is always crowded with devotees purifying themselves. Some of the temples lining the riverbank were built around the 14th century, and many of them have a history of 200 to 300 years. In the suburbs 8 km southwest, there are Buddhist cave temples dating from the 1st century BC to the 2nd century AD.
