A town in Kayabe-gun, Hokkaido. The town is served by the JR Hakodate Main Line, the Do-o Expressway, National Route 5, and Route 278. Mount Komagatake towers to the east, and Uchiura Bay to the north. The town once prospered through herring and sardine fishing. Scallop farming and greenhouse cultivation using geothermal energy are popular. Hokkaido's first geothermal power plant is located here. 北海道茅部(かやべ)郡の町。JR函館本線,道央自動車道,国道5号線,278号線が通じる。東に駒ヶ岳がそびえ,北は内浦湾に臨む。かつてはニシン・イワシ漁で栄えた。ホタテ養殖,地熱を利用したハウス栽培が盛ん。北海道で最初の地熱発電所がある。2005年4月茅部郡砂原町を編入。368.79km2。1万7859人(2010)。
