A town in Higashiibaraki County, located in eastern Ibaraki Prefecture, south of the mouth of the Naka River. Isohama-cho, the town in the center, has been a fishing town since early modern times. The fishing and seafood processing industries are thriving, but in recent years it has developed as a tourist destination, with Oarai Isosaki Shrine and Joyo Meiji Memorial Hall. The folk song "Isobushi" is famous. In 1968, the Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute's Oarai Research and Development Center (now the Japan Atomic Energy Agency's Oarai Research and Development Center) was established. The Kashima Rinkai Railway runs through the town, and long-distance ferries depart and arrive in Hokkaido. 茨城県東部,那珂(なか)川河口の南部に位置する東茨城郡の町。中心の磯浜町は近世以来の漁業町。水産業,水産加工業が盛んであるが,近年は観光地として発展,大洗磯前(いそさき)神社,常陽明治記念館がある。民謡〈磯節〉は有名。1968年日本原子力研究所大洗研究所(現・日本原子力研究開発機構大洗研究開発センター)設置。鹿島臨海鉄道が通じ,北海道へ長距離フェリーが発着する。東日本大震災で,町内において被害が発生。23.74km2。1万8328人(2010)。
