Kotoji Kikuhara

Kotoji Kikuhara

Jiuta and sokyoku performer. His real name was Nunohara Tokutaro. He became blind at the age of four and was adopted by the second Kikuhara, Kikuue Akikotoyoshi Toshikazu, to study under him. He also studied under the second Kikunaka Shige Toshikazu, and passed on the Nogawa-ryu sangen honte and Ikuta-ryu sokyoku. He served as the head of the Todo Music Association and the first principal of the Koto Music School, and petitioned the Ministry of Education to establish a koto department in a girls' school. He presided over the Koto Friends Association and worked to popularize sangen honte in his later years. His works include the four "Kikuhara pieces": Tsumikusa, Kumo no Mine, Monaka no Tsuki, Ginsekai, as well as Shunkin Sho and Akikaze no Ji, and he also performed many sangenkyoku arrangements. His daughter, Kikuhara Hatsuko (1899-2001), was recognized as a holder of an important intangible cultural property in 1979, as a representative of jiuta performance in the Kansai region.

地歌箏曲家。本名布原徳太郎。4歳で失明して2世菊原の菊植明琴吉寿一の養子となり師事。2世菊仲繁寿一にも師事し,野川流三弦本手と生田流箏曲を伝承。当道音楽会本部長,箏曲音楽学校初代校長などを務め,文部省に女学校箏曲科設置を陳情。琴友会を主宰し,晩年には三弦本手の普及に努めた。作品に「菊原の四つ物」といわれる『摘草』『雲の峰』『最中の月』『銀世界』のほか,『春琴抄』『秋風の辞』などがあり,三弦曲への箏の手付も多数ある。娘の菊原初子 (1899~2001) は関西における地歌演奏の代表者として,1979年重要無形文化財保持者に認定されている。
