An old town in Tamana District, northwestern Kumamoto Prefecture. Occupying the middle reaches of the Kikuchi River, Eda, the town center, has long been a key transportation hub in northern Higo Province. Watermelon cultivation is thriving, and the town also produces rice, grapes, pears, and other crops. Electrical appliance companies have established operations here. The Kyushu Expressway runs through the town. The town is home to the Eda Funayama Kofun (historic site). In March 2006, it merged with Mikawa Town, Tamana District, to become Nagomi Town, Tamana District. Area: 38.27 km2 . Population: 6,979 (2003). 熊本県北西部,玉名郡の旧町。菊池川中流域を占め,中心市街の江田は古くから肥後国北部の交通の要衝であった。スイカの栽培が盛んなほか,米,ブドウ,ナシなどを産する。電器などの企業が進出している。九州自動車道が通じる。江田船山古墳(史跡)がある。2006年3月,玉名郡三加和町と合併し町制,玉名郡和水町となる。38.27km2。6979人(2003)。
