… Marsupials such as Eoderpis, a member of the opossum family, appeared in North America in the Upper Cretaceous, followed by several genera in Europe, but later became extinct and evolved in South America and Australia (Figure). In South America, the hyena-like Borhiena and the saber-toothed tiger-like Thylacosmilus appeared in the Miocene, and in Australia, the lion-sized Thylacoleo and the rhinoceros-sized Diprotodon (both from the Cuscoidea) appeared in the Pleistocene, but no fossils are known from before the Miocene. Modern species are of the Cuscoidea, whose second and third toes have fused together to form a comb for combing hair (one pair of lower incisors...)
