An annual plant of the Orobanchaceae family. It is widely distributed from the tropics to the temperate zones of eastern Asia, and grows in grasslands throughout Japan. It parasitizes the roots of plants such as Miscanthus and ginger, lacks chloroplasts, and has short stems that rarely emerge above ground. In summer, it produces a yellowish-brown flower stalk about 20 cm tall, and flowers with boat-shaped, reddish-brown calyxes, 3-4 cm long, and 1 cm in diameter, bloom sideways, with a pale purple-pink corolla. After flowering, it produces an ovoid capsule that produces a large number of small seeds. A similar but larger species, A. sinensis , is found in warm areas of western Japan, the Ogasawara Islands, and Okinawa, and parasitizes herbs of the Poaceae and Cyperaceae families. It was named after the shape of its flower. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
