… In the 17th and 18th centuries, citizen performing groups, including city musicians, were established in various Dutch cities, providing a venue for citizens to listen to music and becoming the forerunners of modern public concerts. The influence of German Romanticism was strong in the first half of the 19th century, but from the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century, composers such as B. Zweers (1854-1924), J. Röntgen (1898-1969), A. Diepenbrock (1862-1921), and J. Wagnaar (1862-1941) emerged and raised Dutch music to a world-class level. The Amsterdam Concertgebouw Orchestra, founded in 1888, grew into one of the world's leading orchestras in collaboration with the famous conductor Mengelberg. …
