1848‐1907 A representative American sculptor of the late 19th century. He emigrated to New York from Dublin, Ireland at a young age. After studying at the École des Beaux-Arts (National School of Fine Arts) in Paris, he was exposed to Renaissance sculpture in Italy and returned to Japan in 1874. He soon distinguished himself with his solid naturalistic techniques, and from around 1880 he occupied a leading position in the sculpture world. He created many portrait sculptures and monuments, leaving behind public works in New York, Boston, Washington, and other cities.
