Cape Hedo

The northernmost cape on Okinawa's main island. It is located in Kunigami Village, Kunigami County. It is a plateau made of limestone from the Triassic Period of the Mesozoic era and Ryukyu limestone from the Quaternary Period. The cape forms vertical cliffs and is a scenic spot with a remarkable development of karst topography, including the Karenfeldt, and is designated as part of Yanbaru National Park. On a clear day, you can see Yoron Island, the southernmost island of Kagoshima Prefecture, located about 23 kilometers north at sea. The cape has therefore become a symbol of Okinawa's return to the motherland, and a monument commemorating this has been erected here.

沖縄本島最北端の岬。国頭(くにがみ)郡国頭村にある。中生代三畳紀の石灰岩と第四紀琉球(りゅうきゅう)石灰岩からなる台地をなす。岬の部分で垂直崖(がい)になり、カレンフェルトなどカルスト地形の発達の顕著な景観地で、やんばる国立公園に指定されている。晴天時には北方海上約23キロメートルにある鹿児島県最南端の与論島(よろんじま)を眺望できる。岬はそのため祖国復帰のシンボルの地となり、その記念碑が立っている。
