...The farce that was born in late medieval France is said to have originated as an interlude in religious drama. During the Renaissance, Roman comedy was rediscovered in Italy, and commedia erudita (educational comedy) was written in imitation of it. On the other hand, the Abele spelen (popular secular drama) of the 14th century in the Netherlands was one of the most popular humorous plays.
