Dentsuin Temple
Year of death: August 28, 1602 (October 13, 1602)
Year of birth: Kyoroku 1 (1528)
A woman from a samurai family during the Sengoku period. The birth mother of Tokugawa Ieyasu. Odai. Her father was Mizuno Tadamasa, lord of Kariya Castle in Mikawa (Kariya City, Aichi Prefecture). After her mother, Otomi (Kayoin), lost Tadamasa, she remarried Matsudaira Kiyoyasu, lord of Okazaki Castle, and Odai moved to Okazaki Castle with her mother. In 1541, she married Kiyoyasu's son Matsudaira Hirotada, and gave birth to Ieyasu the following year. However, in 1548, she was separated from him when her father's Mizuno clan sided with the Oda clan, and she returned to her birthplace. She later remarried Hisamatsu Toshikatsu, lord of Akoi Castle (Chita County) in the same province. She gave birth to three sons and four daughters. In 1560, she was reunited with Ieyasu at Akoi Castle, where he was heading to Okehazama as the vanguard of the Imagawa forces. Later, her husband Toshikatsu was allowed to use the hollyhock crest and the Matsudaira family name, and her sons Katsutoshi and Sadakatsu were treated as members of Ieyasu's family. In 1602, just after an audience with Emperor Goyozei, she died at Fushimi Castle and was posthumously awarded the rank of Junior First Rank. She is buried in Denzuin Temple in Tokyo. <References> Nakamura Takaya, "Ieyasu's Family Leaves"
