Nippara Limestone Cave - Nippara Limestone Cave

This limestone cave is located in the Ogawadani valley of the Hibara River, a tributary of the Tama River, in the northwest of Okutama Town, Nishitama District, Tokyo. The largest cave, Shingu Cave, is about 527 meters deep, and its temperature remains constant at 11 degrees Celsius throughout the year. During the Edo period, it was a Shugendo training center called Issekiyama Daigongen, and is home to stalactites and stalagmites named Byakue Kannon and Kongo Zue. It has been designated a natural monument of the capital, and is part of Chichibu Tama Kai National Park. It is about 40 minutes by bus from Okutama Station, the last stop on the JR Ome Line. Limestone peaks such as Kagoiwa, Tsubameiwa, and Bonteniwa rise nearby, and the downstream is called Nichibara Valley.
