An English scholastic scholar active in the first half of the 12th century. Dates of birth and death unknown. Born in Bath. A typical scholar of the 12th century, known in cultural history as the "century of translation," he played a pioneering role in translating and introducing new scientific knowledge that had blossomed in the Arabic cultural sphere to the Latin world. After studying in France, he was not satisfied with his old knowledge and traveled for about seven years to Italy, Sicily, Syria, and probably Palestine and Spain, striving to absorb new knowledge. 12世紀の前半に活躍したイギリスのスコラ学者。生没年不詳。バースBathの生れ。文化史的に〈翻訳の世紀〉と呼ばれるヨーロッパ12世紀の典型的な学者の一人で,アラビア文化圏で開花していた科学的な新知識をラテン世界に翻訳・紹介するのに開拓者的な役割を果たした。フランスで学んだ後,旧来の知識に飽き足らず,イタリア,シチリア,シリアのほかに,おそらくパレスティナやスペインをほぼ7年にわたって巡歴し,新知識の吸収に努めた。
