…The first example of an orangery is said to have been the one built in 1684 at the Chelsea Physician Gardens in England. In the early 19th century, greenhouses with glass roofs and central domes appeared (such as the greenhouse at Syanne House in London (1827) designed by Charles Fowler). In addition to this, long, narrow greenhouses also appeared, with a wall on the north side, a glass canopy sloping south, and tiered platforms inside for potted plants, primarily for the purpose of forcing plants to grow. …
