…For a time, they also bought silk directly from the production area, but they accepted raw silk (noboseito) from shippers in Omi, Mino, Hida, Echizen, Kai, Kozuke, Musashi, Mutsu, etc., and sold it to the silk brokers at the market price set by the silk broker association, after which they settled the transaction with the shippers. Many of them also worked with silk wholesalers who had similar business practices, and were often collectively called silk and silk wholesalers. They were established as specialized wholesalers from around the second half of the 17th century, and in 1731 (Kyoho 16) 22 houses formed a stock association, which was officially recognized by the association in 1732, and in 1735, 34 houses were formed. …
