A village in Kitagunma County, central Gunma Prefecture. Population 12,551 (1995). It occupies the southeastern slope of Mt. Haruna. The northwestern part is mountainous and has many artificial cedar forests, while the gentle slopes of the southeastern part are covered with fields and many settlements. Livestock farming, including beef cattle and poultry, is the main agricultural industry, and shiitake mushrooms are also grown. Grape cultivation has become popular in recent years, and there are many tourist vineyards. At the foot of Mt. 群馬県中央部,北群馬郡の村。人口1万2551(1995)。榛名山南東斜面を占める。北西部は山地で杉の人工林が多く,南東部の緩斜面には畑が広がり,集落も多い。肉用牛,養鶏などの畜産が農業の中心で,シイタケ栽培も行われる。近年ブドウ栽培が盛んになり,観光ブドウ園が多い。箕郷(みさと)町にまたがる榛名山麓には陸上自衛隊相馬ヶ原演習場がある。【千葉 立也】
