Hidden fish - Encheliophis sagamianus

Japanese: カクレウオ(隠魚) - カクレウオ（英語表記）Encheliophis sagamianus

A marine fish of the family Polytminae in the order Perciformes (illustration). It lives in slightly deep coastal waters south of the Sagami Bay. It reaches a total length of about 20 cm and is pale gray with many small black spots scattered on it. Its body is long and slender, tapering toward the rear. It has no scales or pelvic fins, and its anus is located in the throat. These morphological characteristics are thought to be closely related to the species' habit of living in the intestines of the Fuji sea cucumber and sometimes large starfish. When entering the body of a sea cucumber, it steps back using its slender tail and enters through the anus of the sea cucumber.

スズキ目カクレウオ科の海産魚（イラスト）。相模灘以南各地の沿岸のやや深いところにすむ。全長約20cmに達し，体色は淡灰色で小黒点が多数散在する。体は細長く後部にいくほど細くなる。体にはうろこ，腹びれがなく，肛門がのど部にある。これらの形態的特徴は本種がフジナマコやときには大型のヒトデの腸内にすむ習性をもつことと密接な関連があると考えられている。ナマコの体内に入るときには，細い尾部から後ずさりするようにし，ナマコの肛門から侵入する。
