A monk of the Rinzai sect of Buddhism in the Muromachi period. His other name was Touin. He was from Akamagaseki, Nagato (Yamaguchi Prefecture). At the age of nine, he studied under Keiho Genkin at Nanzenji Unkoan, and mainly studied Japanese and foreign classics at the Five Mountains of Kyoto, becoming proficient in Song Confucianism. In 1467 (Onin 1), he accompanied a Japanese envoy to Ming China, studied Zhu Xi philosophy, and returned to Japan. At the invitation of the Shimazu clan, he opened Keijuan (Touin Temple) in Satsuma (Kagoshima Prefecture) and lectured on Song Confucianism. In 1481 (Bunmei 13), he published the Great Learning, with new annotations by Zhu Xi (Zhu Xi), and became the founder of the Satsunan school. He also lived at Ankoku-ji Temple in Hyuga (Miyazaki Prefecture), Kennin-ji Temple, and Nanzen-ji Temple, and passed away on June 15, 1512. He wrote works such as Shima-in Gyo-shou (Island-Sharing Fishing Song), Shima-in Zakko (Island-Sharing Miscellany), and Kaho Waten (Family Laws and Principles).
