Sanno faith - Sannoshinko

Japanese: 山王信仰 - さんのうしんこう
Sanno faith - Sannoshinko
Belief in Sanno Gongen, the deity enshrined at Hiyoshi Taisha Shrine at the foot of Mt. Hiei in Shiga Prefecture. This belief originated when Saicho founded Mt. Hiei, following the example of the Sanno shrine enshrined at Kokusei-ji Temple on Mt. Tendai in the Tang Dynasty, worshipped the local deity Oyamakui as Sanno God and made him the guardian deity of Enryaku-ji Temple. Later, the deities of Kamo, Kasuga, and Hakusan were invited to be enshrined, and seven shrines were built each in the upper, middle, and lower areas, making up the total number of Sanno Twenty-One Shrines. With the rise of the Tendai sect, it was worshipped by both the court and common people, and spread throughout the country. In particular, as monkeys are regarded as divine messengers, it was syncretized with the Koshin faith and worshipped as a deity for safe childbirth, child rearing, and matchmaking. → Sanno Ichijitsu Shinto
