In ancient China, among the vagabond classes, those who carried swords, formed gangs, maintained integrity in private relationships, and always took revenge on those who dishonored their relatives, acquaintances, and friends were called kyou, yukyo, or kyouke, and their spirit was called renkyo. Ren means to be sincere in relationships, to rescue people from distress without regard for personal interests or life or death, and to take responsibility for sheltering people even if it means breaking the state's ban.
