Located in western Idaho, Idaho is the state capital and largest city in the United States. It has a population of 146,000 (1994). It is located in the Boise Valley, a tributary of the Snake River, at an altitude of 835m. Gold was discovered there in 1862, and Fort Boise was built by the US Army the following year. It flourished as a town along the Oregon Trail. Agriculture developed with the development of irrigation projects, and food and meat processing plants were established in the center of the agricultural and livestock region. The headquarters of the Boise National Forest is also located here. [Yagasaki Noritaka] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
