A Joruri term. It refers to the first part of the first act of a historical Joruri (basically a five-stage structure). Originally, the "daijo" was highly valued as a ceremonial act, and was performed by the highest-ranking tayu (courtesy of the troupe). As time passed, the religious significance was forgotten and disregarded, and young tayu (courtesy of the trainees) took turns performing the daijo behind the screens for practice. The daijo of "Kanadehon Chushingura" is particularly famous, and it is the only full-length play that has long been passed down as a solemn ritualistic piece, so today in Kabuki, the "daijo" refers to the one in "Chushingura."
