Chrysanthemum stone

Japanese: 菊花石 - きっかせき

One of the most well-known floral stones. It is found in Neomatsuda, Motosu City, Gifu Prefecture. The host rock is diabase tuff, and the calcite and quartz contained therein appear as radial crystals, making it look as if chrysanthemum flowers have opened on the stone's surface. Most of the flowers are white, but there are also red flowers, all of which are gorgeous. The flowers come in a variety of sizes and positions, making them highly ornamental. Its history as a suiseki is quite long, but it became especially popular in the 1930s and 1940s. It was designated a Special Natural Monument in 1952 (Showa 27).

Japanese:

代表的な花紋石の一つ。岐阜県本巣(もとす)市根尾松田に産する。母岩は輝緑凝灰岩で、これに含有される方解石、石英などが放射状結晶体となって表れ、あたかも石面に菊花が開いたようにみえる。白花が多いが、赤花もあり、いずれも華麗である。また、花の大小、その位置もさまざまで、観賞価値が高い。水石としての歴史もかなり古いが、昭和10年代からとくに人気が出た。1952年（昭和27）特別天然記念物に指定。
