Insectivore, Solenodontidae. Endemic to Cuba, Central America. Similar in appearance to the common shrew, but much larger, with a body length of 25 cm and a tail length of 18-20 cm. The upper and sides of the body are dark brown, with a cream color from the head to the chest. The snout is long and the nostrils protrude outward. The surface of the tail is sparsely hairy. It is nocturnal, feeding on insects, invertebrates, and other animal matter on the ground, as well as fruit. It uses underground holes, tree hollows, and caves as hiding places.
