[Died] May 20, 1940. Abralid. Swedish poet and novelist. Received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1916. Due to poor health, he traveled to southern Europe and the Near East at the age of 17, during which time he studied under J. Jerome in Paris with the aim of becoming a painter. Returning to Sweden in 1887, he took over his father's estate and began writing poetry. The following year, he made his debut with Vallfart och vandringsår (Years of Pilgrimage and Wandering), a collection of poems that described his impressions of his travels in the Near East. Around the time of the publication of Dikter (1895), he gradually took on a patriotic inclination, and wrote historical novels such as Karolinerna (2 volumes, 1997-1998) and Folkungaträdet (1905-07). His other works include the novels Hans Alienus (1892) and Den heliga Birgittas pilgrimsfärd (1901).

スウェーデンの詩人，小説家。 1916年ノーベル文学賞受賞。病弱のため 17歳のとき南ヨーロッパ，近東の旅に出，この間画家を志してパリで J.ジェロームに学んだこともある。 1887年帰国，父の地所を継ぐかたわら詩作を始め，翌年，近東の旅の印象を綴った詩集『巡礼と放浪の歳月』 Vallfart och vandringsårでデビュー。『詩集』 Dikter (1895) 出版の頃から，次第に愛国的傾向を帯び，歴史小説『カール王の軍兵』 Karolinerna (2巻，97～98) ，『フォルクング族』 Folkungaträdet (1905～07) などを書いた。ほかに小説『ハンス・アリエヌース』 Hans Alienus (1892) ，『聖ビルイッタの巡礼』 Den heliga Birgittas pilgrimsfärd (1901) などがある。
