American professional baseball player (right-handed batter and thrower). Played as a third baseman for the Anaheim Angels (now the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim), Arizona Diamondbacks, and Toronto Blue Jays in Major League Baseball. He was expected to be the most powerful third baseman since Mike Schmidt, a former Philadelphia Phillies player who is a Hall of Fame member.

Born August 3rd in Newport Beach, California. While at the University of California, Los Angeles, he hit 34 home runs, the most in the league, and attracted attention. He also played for the United States at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, hitting four home runs and helping the team win the bronze medal. In 1997, he was drafted by the Angels in the first round (third overall), and in 1998, he made his major league debut after clearing the AA and AAA levels of the minor leagues. In 1999, he was a regular from the start of the season, and although his batting average was low at .24, he hit 29 home runs, showing glimpses of his talent. In 2000, he was the home run king with 47 home runs, and in 2001 he hit 41, but in 2002 he only hit 30 home runs. However, that year he hit four consecutive home runs in two games, and in the World Series he had a batting average of .385, three home runs, and eight RBIs, earning him the Most Valuable Player award. In 2003 and 2004, his home run total dropped to the 10s due to injuries. In 2005, he made a comeback after signing with the Diamondbacks as a free agent, recording a team-leading 37 home runs and 97 RBIs, but was traded to the Blue Jays after the season. In 2006, he struck out 134 times, but hit 38 home runs as the cleanup hitter, the most on the team.

Since 2007

In 2007, he played in 115 games due to an injury. He hit 20 home runs, marking the seventh time he had 20 or more home runs, but his batting average was .262 and he only had 62 RBIs. Since 2008, he has played for the St. Louis Cardinals.

His career stats up until 2007 were 1244 games played, 1124 hits, a batting average of .254, 277 home runs, and 778 RBIs. His main titles include being the home run king once.

アメリカのプロ野球選手（右投右打）。大リーグ（メジャー・リーグ）のアナハイム・エンゼルス（現ロサンゼルス・エンゼルス・オブ・アナハイム）、アリゾナ・ダイヤモンドバックス、トロント・ブルージェイズで三塁手としてプレー。野球殿堂入りを果たしている元フィラデルフィア・フィリーズのマイク・シュミット以来の強打の三塁手として期待された選手である。

　8月3日、カリフォルニア州ニューポート・ビーチで生まれる。カリフォルニア大学ロサンゼルス校時代にはリーグ最多記録となる34本のホームランを放ち、注目を集めた。また1996年のオリンピック・アトランタ大会にアメリカ代表として出場し、4本のホームランを放ち、銅メダル獲得に貢献した。1997年、ドラフト1巡目（全体3番目）指名を受けてエンゼルスに入団、98年にマイナー・リーグのAA級とAAA級を次々にクリアして大リーグにデビューした。1999年は開幕からレギュラーに定着、打率2割4分と低かったが、ホームラン29本を打って、才能の片鱗(へんりん)をみせた。2000年は47本で本塁打王となり、01年も41本を打ったが、02年は30本にとどまった。しかしこの年は2試合にまたがっての4打数連続本塁打を記録、またワールド・シリーズで打率3割8分5厘、ホームラン3本、打点8と猛打を振るってシリーズ最優秀選手（MVP）に輝いた。2003年、04年は故障などでホームランが10本台に大きく落ち込んだ。2005年はFA（フリーエージェント）で移籍したダイヤモンドバックスでチームトップの37ホームラン、97打点を記録して復活したが、シーズン後に交換トレードでブルージェイズに移籍した。2006年は134三振を喫したものの、四番打者としてチーム最多のホームラン38本を放つ活躍をみせた。
