An annual plant of the Polygonaceae family (APG classification: Polygonaceae). The stem is erect or ascending, 20-50 cm tall, cylindrical, and usually reddish purple. The leaves are alternate, broadly lanceolate or lanceolate, pointed at the tip, and hairy on the margins and underside of the veins. The leaf sheaths are tubular with equal length hair margins. The flowering season is from June to October, and the branches produce spikes 2-5 cm long with reddish purple, or rarely white, small flowers. The perianth has five petals, obovate, and about 1.5 mm long. There are usually eight stamens, three styles, and the achene is dark brown, triangular, about 1.5 mm long, glossy, and wrapped in the persistent perianth. It is commonly seen on roadsides in the wilderness from Hokkaido to Kyushu, and is also widely distributed in Korea, China, Southeast Asia, etc. Another name for it, Akamamma, means "red rice," and it comes from the fact that the granular safflower resembles red rice and is used by children as a pretend meal. [Junko Kobayashi December 11, 2020] The stems are erect or obliquely upward, and the leaves are broad lanceolate or lanceolate. From June to October, it produces spike-like flowers at the ends of the branches, and bears small crimson-purple flowers.
