...This species is named after its long pectoral fins, which resemble the wings of a cicada, and its English name, flying gurnard, comes from its habit of flying over the sea. Three species of gurnard live in the waters off Japan: the semi-gurnard Dactyloptena orientalis , the giant semi-gurnard D. gilberti , and the spotted semi-gurnard Daicocus peterseni . The giant semi-gurnard is found in southern Japan, while the semi-gurnard and the spotted semi-gurnard are found in a wide range, from central Honshu south to South Africa.
