...It became a leading paper with its unique social reform tone and campaigns, claiming to be for the working class. After Greeley's death in 1872, Whitelaw Reid, who was the CEO, took over (taking full control in 1883), and over the years it transformed into a daily newspaper targeted at industrial and commercial capitalists and the emerging upper class. Due to competition with The New York Times, the paper was modernized in 1912 under Reid's son Ogden.
