...From the Elizabethan period through to the reign of James I, in addition to church music, madrigals, airs, and lute songs in the typical Renaissance style became popular, and in the field of instrumental music, lute music, keyboard music (especially virginal music), and ensemble pieces called consorts became popular. Representative composers include W. Byrd (1543-1623), T. Morley (1557-1602), J. Dowland, O. Gibbons, T. Weelkes (c. 1575-1623), J. Wilbye (1574-1638), T. Campion (1567-1620), P. Rosseter (1568-1623), T. Tomkins (1572-1656), and J. Bull (c. 1562-1628) and P. Philips (1561-1628), who emigrated to the continent. At the same time, the popularity of Shakespeare's plays led to a rise in dramatic music, and a pageant-like art form called masque, which focused on music and dance, became popular, and Campion and the Lawes brothers (H. Lawes (1596-1662), W. Lawes (1602-45)) were active in the field.
