German-born geographer. Studied under Hettner at the University of Heidelberg, and taught at the University of Kiel from 1922, and at the University of Bonn from 1929 to 1937. He later went to the United States and taught at the University of Wisconsin and the University of Minnesota. He produced a great deal of work in the field of agricultural geography, and defined the concept of an agricultural system that emphasized social and human factors instead of the traditional understanding based on environmental theory. His works include Das System der Landwirtschaftsgeographie (1933).

ドイツ生れの地理学者。ハイデルベルク大学でヘットナーに学び，1922年からキール大学，29～37年ボン大学で教え，のちにアメリカに渡ってウィスコンシン大学，ミネソタ大学などで教えた。農業地理学の分野で多くの仕事を残し，従来の環境論的理解に代って社会的・人文的要因を重視した農業体系の概念を定義した。『農業地理学の体系』 Das System der Landwirtschaftsgeographie (1933) などの著書がある。
