...The harpsichord is a plucked instrument that uses a plectrum to strike the strings, while the piano is a struck instrument that uses a hammer to strike the strings. To distinguish it from the harpsichord, the piano was also called the Hammerklavier in Germany from the late 18th century to the early 19th century. The volume of the harpsichord changed in a stepped manner by operating the stops (terraced dynamics), while the volume of the piano can be freely changed either suddenly or gradually by changing the strength of the keystrokes. ...
