Santorini (island) (English spelling)

Japanese: サントリニ[島]（英語表記）Santoríni

A volcanic island in the Cyclades in the Aegean Sea, Greece. Its modern Greek name is Thíra, and its ancient name was Thēra. It has an area of about 75 km2 and a population of about 10,000. It is known as a region that produces unique wines. The three islands of Thira, Thirasia, and Aspronisi are arranged like an outer rim, surrounding a sea inlet (caldera) 11 km in length and 7 km in width, and the two islands of Palea Kameni and Nea Kameni (central cones) in the center. A large pumice eruption occurred around 1450 BC, and the center of the original volcano collapsed, forming the present caldera, and the islands of Thira and Thirasia were covered with pumice fall and pyroclastic flow deposits several tens of meters thick.

ギリシアのエーゲ海にあるキクラデス諸島の火山島。現代ギリシア語の別名はティラThíra，古代名はテラThēra。面積約75km2，人口約1万。独特なワインの産地として知られる。ティラ，ティラシア，アスプロニシの3島が外輪山状に配列して長径11km，短径7kmの入海(カルデラ)を囲み，中央にパレア･カメニとネア･カメニの2島(中央火口丘)を抱いている。前1450年ころに大規模な軽石噴火が起こり，もとの火山体の中央部は崩壊して現在のカルデラが形成され，ティラおよびティラシア島は厚さ数10mにおよぶ降下軽石，火砕流堆積物に覆われた。
