Direct vassal - direct vassal

A title for direct vassals in medieval and early modern samurai society. They were under the direct control of their lord, as opposed to subordinate vassals. Gokenin in the Kamakura period, and daimyo, hatamoto, and gokenin in the Edo period were direct vassals to the shogun. In the Edo period, hatamoto and gokenin, excluding daimyo, were collectively called jokkan (direct retainers). Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |

中・近世武家社会における直属の家臣の称。主君の直接支配下に属し，陪臣に対する。鎌倉時代の御家人，江戸時代の大名・旗本・御家人は将軍に対して直臣にあたる。また江戸時代，直臣のうち大名を除く旗本・御家人を総称して直参といった。
