Direct vassal - direct vassal

Japanese: 直臣 - じきしん
Direct vassal - direct vassal
A title for direct vassals in medieval and early modern samurai society. They were under the direct control of their lord, as opposed to subordinate vassals. Gokenin in the Kamakura period, and daimyo, hatamoto, and gokenin in the Edo period were direct vassals to the shogun. In the Edo period, hatamoto and gokenin, excluding daimyo, were collectively called jokkan (direct retainers).
