Shinto dance - Jinjimai

A dance performed during Shinto rituals. It is the opposite of dances performed during Buddhist ceremonies, and there is no specific dance called Shinto dance. Bugaku (Chinese court dance), Dengaku (Dengaku), Furyu (Furyu), Noh, Shishimai (Lion dance), Kagura (Shinto dance), and other performing arts are all called Shinto dances when they are performed during Shinto rituals, but the same performing arts are not called Shinto dances when they are performed outside of Shinto rituals. When referring to performing arts as a whole, it is called Shinto performing arts, and when the emphasis is on the dance, it is called Shinto dance. In the late early modern period, Tamura Hachidayu, who lived in Asakusa, Edo, and those of his lineage were called Shinto dancers, and the Sato Kagura and Kusemai dances they performed were also called Shinto dances. In the Fudono Kagura dance of Shiiba village, Higashiusuki county, Miyazaki prefecture, the first thing performed is a series of dances called Shikisanba, which are considered sacred, and are known as Shinto dances.

神事のときに舞う舞。仏事のときに舞う舞に対していい、特別に神事舞という定まった舞があるわけではない。舞楽(ぶがく)、田楽(でんがく)、風流(ふりゅう)、能、獅子舞(ししまい)、神楽(かぐら)など神事の際に舞われた場合にはすべて神事舞といい、同じ芸能でも神事以外の場所で舞われた場合には神事舞とはいわない。芸能全体をさすときには神事芸能とよび、舞に重点を置いてよぶときには、神事舞という。また、近世後期、江戸・浅草に住した田村八太夫およびその系統の人々を神事舞太夫といい、彼らによって舞われた里神楽や曲舞(くせまい)も神事舞といった。宮崎県東臼杵(ひがしうすき)郡椎葉(しいば)村不土野(ふどの)の神楽では、神楽を始める最初に式三番(しきさんば)といって神聖視されている舞、数番を演ずるが、それを神事舞といっている。
