A temporary outdoor lifestyle using tents, simple huts, or natural features such as the shade of rocks. Also called camping. Generally, it refers to outdoor recreational living that began in the late 19th century, and does not include the everyday camping for nomadic or hunting activities practiced in parts of Mongolia, Central Asia, and the United States. It is usually done in the summer on plateaus, lakes, or beaches. It is said that camping was first practiced in the United States by FW Gunn, principal of the Washington Galena School, who recognized the educational value of camping and held it in Connecticut (1861). It became widespread in 1907 when Baden-Powell of England adopted it for the Boy Scout movement, and since then camping has spread all over the world with the development of the Boy Scout movement. Today, it is widely practiced as a general leisure activity, and dedicated vehicles (camper vans) are also in widespread use.
