Raw Silk Depository Incident

Japanese: 生糸荷預所事件 - きいとにあずかりしょじけん

This was an incident involving raw silk trade that occurred between a leading raw silk dealer and a foreign trading post. The Depository was a foreign raw silk trading organization established in Yokohama in September 1881 by Mogi Sobei, Shibusawa Kisaku, Hara Zenzaburo, and others. The organization aimed to monopolize foreign trade by its member dealers and to take control of the production and distribution system through currency exchange financing. However, the foreign dealers strongly opposed this and formed a boycott league, refusing to buy from the Depository, which resulted in a two-month suspension of raw silk trade until November. However, by October, some dealers began to sell their products without checking the market, which led to internal criticism, so Shibusawa Eiichi and others tried to reconcile with the foreign dealers and the Depository was dissolved under certain conditions. Although they were ultimately defeated, this incident marked the beginning of the establishment of the raw silk dealer system.

有力生糸売込商と外国商館との間に起った生糸取引にかかわる事件。 1881年9月に茂木惣兵衛，渋沢喜作，原善三郎らによって横浜に設立された対外商生糸取引機関である荷預所は，加盟売込商による対外商取引の独占と，荷為替金融を通じての生産流通機構の掌握を企図したものであったが，これに強く反対した外商は不買同盟を結成，荷預所からの買取り拒否という対抗策をとったため，生糸取引が 11月までの2ヵ月間停止した。しかし，10月には抜売りをするものも出はじめ，内部批判も出たため，渋沢栄一らが外商との和解に乗出し，荷預所は条件つきで解散することとなった。結果的には敗北したが，この事件を契機に生糸の売込商体制は確立していくことになる。
