An old town in Kitamuro District in the central-southern part of Mie Prefecture. Facing the Kumano Nada Sea, the town is a thriving fishing industry. The town is warm and rainy, so it is rich in forestry resources and produces a lot of citrus fruits. The Kisei Main Line runs through the town. The coast is ideal for fishing, and Oshima Island in the ocean is home to tropical plant communities. In October 2005, the town merged with Kaiyama Town in Kitamuro District to become Kihoku Town in Kitamuro District. Area: 110.48 km2 . Population: 11,318 (2003). 三重県中南部,北牟婁(きたむろ)郡の旧町。熊野灘に面し漁業が盛ん。温暖多雨のため林産資源が豊富で,柑橘(かんきつ)類も多産。紀勢本線が通じる。海岸は釣の好適地,沖の大島には暖地性植物群落がある。2005年10月,北牟婁郡海山町と合併し町制,北牟婁郡紀北町となる。110.48km2。1万1318人(2003)。
