The sturdy structure that forms part of an animal's mouth or the area around it and serves to crush and bite food, predators, etc. is commonly called the jaw. [Invertebrate Jaw] The jaws of invertebrates are generally formed by the hardening of cuticle secreted from the epidermis. Cephalopods have beak-like teeth (commonly known as cockroaches) in their oral cavity, which interlock dorsoventrally. Rotifers have a pair of tooth-like jaws on the inside of their pharynx, one on each side. Polychaetes also have a pair of spine-like jaws on the inside of their pharynx, which allow them to invert their pharynx and protrude it out of the mouth.
