Located in the southeastern tip of Queensland, Australia, it is the second largest city in the state. It has a population of 300,000 (1993). The urban area stretches all the way to Tweed Heads (population approx. 20,000) on the New South Wales side, making it a long, narrow city stretching 40km from north to south. It is home to seaside resorts such as Surfers Paradise, and is rapidly growing as a tourist city. The administrative centre is in Southport, and the airport is in Coolangatta.
