Kiami

Japanese: 喜阿弥 - きあみ

Year of birth: Year of birth and death unknown. An actor of the Dengaku Shinza theater in the Nanboku-cho and early Muromachi periods. His stage name was Kameyasha. He was also known as Kameami. He was active alongside Kan'ami and Do'ami during the time of Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu. His name appears in the entry for March 29, 1374, in Zoku Kyokunsho. He is also frequently mentioned as the "ancestor of music" in Zeami's Sarugaku Dangi, which tells us that he was illiterate, that his style of performance was for connoisseurs, "like looking at something made of bronze," and that he was famous as a master of music, including his excellent performances in Noh performances in which he was given costumes from Nara. His music, which is said to have resembled the Ushikuma of Hiyoshi, was called "Kia-gakari," and is said to have had a great influence on Zeami.

南北朝・室町時代初期の田楽新座の役者。芸名亀夜叉。亀阿弥とも。将軍足利義満の時代に観阿弥,道阿弥などと並んで活躍。『続教訓抄』応安7(1374)年3月29日条に名前がみえる。世阿弥の『申楽談儀』でも「音曲の先祖」としてしばしば言及されており,それによれば文字を識らなかったこと,「胡銅(ブロンズ)の物を見るやう」な通好みの芸風であったこと,南都の装束賜りの能での名演をはじめ,音曲の名人として名を馳せていたことなどが知られる。日吉の牛熊を似せたというその音曲は「喜阿がかり」と呼ばれ,世阿弥にも大きな影響を与えたらしい。
